Tutorials - how to double the front and back of a MILA swimming costume

There's nothing more rewarding than sewing a swimming costume! This is a highly technical garment, and the assembly procedures are specific to each model, depending on the model, the finishes, the position of the assembly seams and the type of elastic assembly.

This can quickly become a real game of Tetris!

If you want to double the front and back of your swimming costume, this item is for you / assembly adapted to the MILA pattern, which has a centre back seam.

Lining the front and back of the shirt

Why double up on a swimming costume?

  • Increase its opacity: some textiles are thicker or lighter than others... Be careful, a fabric may seem opaque to you but once it's wet this may no longer be the case!
  • Improve the quality of the swimming costume: perfect interior finish. A lining can often be used to create sandwich seams (in which case the seam values are not visible).
  • For added comfort: the linings are made of soft fabrics, even when wet.

What fabrics should you use to line your shirt?

Choose a swimwear lining. These fabrics are supple, have a very low rebound coefficient and dry quickly. See our article on swimwear supplies.

How do I line the front and back of a 1-piece swimming costume?

1-Assemble the front of your swimming costume and its lining following the assembly instructions for the model you want to make.

You get the fabric front superimposed on its lining: back to back

2-Assemble the fabric back with its lining:

Superimpose the 2 pieces of fabric forming the back: location on location.
Overlap the 2 pieces of back lining : right sides together.

Superimpose the 2 sets previously formed - 4 layers of fabric are thus superimposed.

Assemble along the centre back line:
- with an overlock stitch machine.
OR
- on a stretch stitch sewing machine and overcast with a zig zag stitch.

3-Assemble the front with the back on the bottom line:

Assemble the jersey along the line of the bottom of the trousers:

Step 1:
- Overlap the fabric front and back: location on location
- and the back lining on the fabric back (already pre-assembled: back to back)

Step 2:
- Layer the front lining over the back lining : location on location

Assemble the 4 layers on the assembly line of the bottom of the trousers:
- with an overlock stitch machine.
OR
- on a stretch stitch sewing machine.

Unfold the swimming costume

4-Assemble the swimming costume along the side lines

As the back is lined, we're going to suggest that you use sandwich seams again to trap the seam values and make them invisible.

Superimpose on the side line :
- fabric front and back : location on location
- back lining : location on location

Use the opening in the thighs to catch the lining.

Assemble :
- with an overlock stitch machine.
OR
- on a stretch stitch sewing machine.

Do the same for the second side

Your lining is ready!
